The world’s first Maori owned wine company, Tohu has a unique brand positioning and strong point of difference. The brand story is encapsulated in the company’s by-line “Our gift from the land – ngā hua a te whenua.” Through our research of the Tohu identity and the previous visual components, we believed that the kowhaiwhai pattern held great promise and potential for development. Elegant, yet simple it could be portrayed in a refined and contemporary manner important for a highly competitive market. It linked well with the meaning of ‘Tohu’, had cultural significance to Tohu and would be an iconic mark for the future, helping to open new markets and attract more desirable distribution partners.
