Mission Hall in Conjunction with Matthijs Siljee for the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand

The Children’s Holocaust Memorial is a travelling public spatial installation that commemorates the children that were killed in the 1939-1945 Holocaust. Commissioned by the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand (HCNZ), this Memorial and its associated exhibition gives a voice to Holocaust victims, survivors, the bereaved and descendants who have found a new life in Aotearoa New Zealand after World War 2.

The Memorial holds a collection of 1,500,000 buttons that were collected as an educational project in 2010 by the pupils of Moriah College in Wellington. Each button represents a child that died in the Holocaust. “The idea behind the project is really to get the children to understand the vastness of that number,” says the former school principal Justine Hitchcock.

The Project won a 2019 Bronze Best Award in the Exihibiton and Temporary Space's catagory.
